NEC floods Japan with 7 new projectors

NEC announced a total of seven ‘green’ video projectors for the Japanese market on Friday [JP]. Each has different specs, but the one characteristic all devices have in common is the low level of energy consumption, which stands at just 0.6W in standby mode (down from 3W for the previous projector series from that company).

Here are the main details for all of the new devices:

• NP610J: 1,024x768 resolution, 3,500 lumens brightness and 500:1 contrast ratio (price: $3,100)


• NP510J: 1,024x768 resolution, 3,000 lumens brightness and 500:1 contrast ratio (price: $2,100)


• NP405J: 1,024x768 resolution, 2,600 lumens brightness and 500:1 contrast ratio (price: $900)


• NP510WJ: 1,280×800 resolution, 3,000 lumens brightness and 500:1 contrast ratio (price: $2,600)


• NP410WJ: 1,280×800 resolution, 2,600 lumens brightness and 450:1 contrast ratio (price: $900)


• NP610SJ: 1,024×768 resolution, 2,600 lumens brightness and 600:1 contrast ratio (price: $2,700)


• NP510WSJ: 1,280×800 resolution, 2,100 lumens brightness and 600:1 contrast ratio (price: $2,100)

The devices will hit Japanese stores between today and November 1 (pictured above is the NP610SJ/510WSJ). NEC Japan hasn’t said anything yet regarding overseas markets.

Optoma PK102 Projector is Released in Japan

A few months ago there was word that Optoma was developing their next generation of pico projectors, the PK102. The device was expected to release but there was no official announcement. Recently, it was discovered that someone managed to get the PK102 onto Amazon. The PK102 is not that different from its predecessor, the PK101 (AKA Pico). The new model features the same 1000:1 contrast ratio and HVGA (480 x 320) resolution as well as a slightly improved 10 ANSI lumens. This new design has the same build and weight as the original but also comes with some extras like a VGA input and a 4GB internal memory. There is also a new battery that allows the PK102 to operate for up to two hours, in energy conservation mode. The PK102 has been released in Japan only right now, but you can get this projector through Amazon for only $650.

New projector houses a DVD player and is cheap, but pretty ugly

Yokohama-based electronics company Kumazaki-Aim has announced a ‘portable’ LED video projector [JP] (size: 268×295×92mm, weight: 2.5kg) that won’t win any design awards but houses a DVD player. Buyers also get a screen (132×25×980mm) for their money.

The projector’s specs aren’t too promising either: 640×480 VGA resolution, 300:1 contrast ratio and 200 lumens brightness won’t get you very far. It produces 60-inch images from 2.1m away. There’s also an SD/MMC card reader, an S-Video interface, a VGA port and 3Wx2ch speakers. The DVD player supports MP3/WMA/AVI/DivX/Xvid and JPEG files.

Out in Japan tomorrow for $600 (projector/DVD player plus screen). I don’t think the thing will ever be available outside Japan so you might want to contact Geek Stuff 4 U if you’re really interested in buying the set.

French-based company, Bonitor has recently released two new mini projectors for the mass market in the form of the MP201 (pictured above) and MP301. Both of these projectors provide a native resolution of 640 x 480 4:3 pixels and feature 15 lumens brightness, 1.57/1.62 throw ratio and a rechargeable battery. The main differences between these two projectors are; the MP201 is specially designed for use with game consoles, DVD/Blu-ray disc player, mobile phone and portable media player, and only comes with a Composite Video input. While, the MP301 is made for use with desktop computer, laptop, netbook and UMPC, and comes with both USB and VGA connectors. The Bonitor MP201 and MP301 are priced at $289 and $249, respectively.

Recently, the company announced that they will be reducing the price of their H1080FD projector in the UK. This model features 1800 ANSI lumens, a full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, and a 5000:1 contrast ratio. The projector also comes with a select but helpful control panel, which includes dual HDMI ports, a composite, component, and an s-video connection. This projector is designed for home theater and is very quiet with a 29 dB noise level. The H1080FD will be reduced in the UK to a retail price of £850, but the projector is still available in the USA for just under $1000.

Runco is a leading brand in luxury video solutions. Today the company announces two new additions to their Video Extreme Series, the VX-33i and VX-33d. These projectors are very similar, featuring a 2000:1 contrast ratio, 3480 ANSI lumens, and a full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. The major difference between the two is that the 33i model has the entire connection panel on the inside, while the 33d comes with an external video processor. The external processor allows the 33d to be mounted virtually anywhere the connection cable will allow, leaving the connection panel and settings with in an easy reach. Jakks Pacific is known for creating amazing electronic toys for under the $100 price line. Today, the company has announced the release of their new toy line for this year’s Christmas shopping season. Among the selection is the new EyeClops Mini projector. This device is about the size of two decks of playing cards and is as light as a anything. The required D battery that is used to power the device allows the projector to run for up to 10 hours at a time. Unfortunately the company has not released any information about the projector’s brightness or resolution, but with LED lamp technology, chances are it needs dark rooms to use. The only connection is a composite AV port, which works for DVD players, or game consoles. ‘Bring the drive-in theater into your living room or project the big game in your backyard. Hitachi has rolled out its latest CP-X4020 multi-purpose projector that will come with native XGA (1,024 x 768) resolution, a brightness level of 4,000 ANSI lumens and a 2,000:1 contrast ratio. Don't worry too much about maintenance since the CP-X4020 will come with Hitachi’s low maintenance hybrid air filter that is touted to run for up to 4,000 hours before requiring a replacement. Other features include a new screen display, interchangeable lenses, native aspect ratios that can be tweaked according to what you're viewing at that moment, dual RGB ports, S-Video, composite, component and several audio ports in terms of connectivity. 3M MPro120 Projector

3M has launched a new mini projector, the 3M MPro120 which uses 3M’s new MM200 projection engine which uses an advanced liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) electronic imager and boasts enhanced image quality.

The 3M MPro120 Projector has a battery life of two to four hours, depending on the brightness setting, and in full brightness mode it achieves a brightness of 12 lumens.

It comes with an integrated stand, stereo speakers, and a tripod, and is designed to be used with laptops and netbooks.

The 3M MPro120 Projector will go on sale in September for $349.

The Samsung P410M projector is one of their newest anticipated pocket projectors. The device features 170 ANSI lumens, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, and SVGA (800 x 600) resolution. Recently, the writers from Engadget got the opportunity to see this projector up close. The P410M is almost an exact duplicate of its predecessor, the P400. The only notable changes are that the P410M is a lot brighter and comes with an added USB port. The USB port is starting to become a common feature for pocket projectors because it allows the user the option of leaving their computer at home and only needing a flash drive. Unfortunately, the writers were not able to see the projector in action due to an accident that occurred during transport. The P410M is set to release next week but the retail price has not been announced yet.

The Optoma HD20 is one of the latest projectors to be released from Optoma. This model features 1700 ANSI lumens, HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, and a 4000:1 contrast ratio. Recently, the writer from PC Magazine got the opportunity to review this projector. The main feature that the writer comments on is the price because this is one of the first projectors that feature full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and retail for under $1000. The setup was relatively quick and easy to adjust. The zoom and focus allowed the projector to be setup in a variety of places. The display was fairly decent, although the writer has seen better pictures from other leading home theater projectors. During the testing, the projector performed worst when it was displaying normal 480i content. The writer even saw a bit of the rainbow effect, which is typical in DLP projectors. However, even with these problems, the writer concluded by stating, ‘The Optoma HD20 brings a new level of affordability to 1080p projectors, with reasonably good image quality for 480p signals and above.’

Ray Displays Reveal Ray Pico Projector

Everyone wants to get into the pico projector markets because it is one of the fastest growing divisions of the projector industry. Recently a new company called Ray Display has released a brand new projector they are calling Ray. Ray is about the size of a palm pilot and features LCoS display technology, 10 ANSI lumens and a VGA (640 x 480) resolution. It is also able to project up to a 70 inch display from about 9½ feet using an LED lamp system that can run for up to 20000 hours. This device doesn’t seem much different from previous pico projectors. The connection port only has an audio port and a video port that can either use a composite adapter or one of several cables that allows Ray to connect to mobile devices like PSPs, iPods, and Zunes. Ray is expected to be released sometime in September for a retail price of $260, which the company says makes the device the cheapest available by $100. However, anyone who has looked through online retailers can tell you that statement is not currently true.

Mitsubishi is proud to announce the release of their latest home theater projector, the HC6800 (AKA LVP-HC6800). This projector features a 30000:1 contrast ratio, 1500 ANSI lumens, and full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. The main feature about this projector is a brand new 10 Bit Reon-VX chipset that gives the HC6800 image quality that can only be compared to the standards found in Hollywood. The smooth black chassis easily disappears when the lights are turned down and with a 20 dB noise level, the only sound viewers will hear is from the movie. The major upset about the HC6800 right now is that it is not available in the USA and there is no information on when or if it ever will be.

Adtec is one of the many new companies that create the latest in pico projector technology. Their latest release, the Bit, is similar to their other models but better. For starters it features 15 ANSI lumens, a 200:1 contrast ratio, and VGA (640 x 480) resolution. It is also stands on end, instead of the typical candy bar design. The connection panel comes with a USB/composite AV port, which allows the projector to be connected to DVD player, computers, and other similar electronics. There is also a head phone port for when the user wants to listen to their content with out disturbing those around him. The Bit is capable of displaying up to a 60 inch display, but with a low brightness, you’ll probably need complete darkness for that. Adtec plans to release the Bit in Japan only for now, and it will retail for about $350. There is no word yet when this projector will come to the USA.

The European Image and Sound Association (EISA) is the largest editorial multimedia organization in Europe. One a year, the organization announces their selections for the best devices in the Audio and Video industries. One of the winners of these awards is Sony, who recently announced that they have been awarded with six awards. Among them is the Best European Video Projector 2009-2010 award, which was given to the Sony VPL-VW85. Unfortunately though, Sony has yet to release any information about the VPL-VW85 projector other than it will be the latest addition to Sony’s BRAVIA series. Sony will accept the award at the awards ceremony, which is scheduled for September 4th in Berlin.

NEC Announces New Projector Lineup

NEC is a proud provider of data-entry projectors. Recently, the company announced that over the next several months they will be releasing up to ten new projectors starting with the NP510W, which was recently released. This projector features a native WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution, 3000 ANSI lumens, and a 500:1 contrast ratio. The new family is intended to replace the old NP600 series and provide a high quality display while using the latest ‘green’ features. The green features are not only designed to be environmentally friendly, but also help reduce the cost of ownership for the user. Some of the features include a 5000 hour lamp life and an extended 1500 hour air filter. Upon starting up the projector, the machine will also use its carbon saving meter and will ask the user if they want to switch to eco mode, which is beneficial, but could get annoying after a while. The other projectors that NEC will release over time include the NP305, NP310, NP405, NP410, NP410W, NP510, NP510WS, NP610 and NP610S. Unfortunately, NEC has not released any information about these models yet. More information will be released as it becomes available.

LG HS102 Projector Review

The LG HS102 projector is the company’s smallest projector to date. This little marvel features 150 ANSI lumens, a 2000:1 contrast ratio, and a native SVGA (800 x 600) resolution. Recently, Trusted Reviews got the opportunity to review the HS102. The first thing the writer noticed was the ultra-small design, the black chassis and red buttons. He was a little concerned about the lens, but it wasn’t a huge concern because the lens is recessed into the body, which provides some protection. The writer was also a little disappointed to notice that the connection panel did not have any composite connections. Instead it only comes with a RGB, USB, and some audio inputs. Fortunately though, the projector does come with a RGB adapter that allows the user to connect composite, but the fact that it’s an extra cord you have to carry doesn’t help. After a quick setup, the writer was fairly pleased with the projector’s performance as it was able to display over a 60-inch display. Another quality feature about the HS102 is its built-in DivX technology, which allows it to play movies, while being connected through the USB cable. After testing the projector, the writers concluded by stating, ‘The HS102 is in most ways a solid effort by LG, offering a well-judged balance between extreme portability, design robustness, and engaging picture quality. Personally I preferred the slightly larger Samsung P400B’s performance, especially if you’re looking for a machine to do domestic film as well as business presentation duties. But by far my biggest gripe with the HS102 has to be its price; it just doesn’t do enough in my book to justify costing £100 more than its Samsung rival.’

Optoma is gearing up for their series of data-grade portable projectors by announcing the release of the first two models, the Pro250X and Pro150S projectors. Both of these projectors feature the latest in DLP display technology as well as 2800 ANSI lumens and a 3000:1 contrast ratio. The major difference between these two models is that the 250X features XGA (1024 x 768) resolution, while the 150S displays SVGA (800 x 600) resolution. BenQ is proud to announce today the release of a brand new home theater projector as well as two more that will be released in September. All of these projectors feature the latest in DLP display technology and have been designed for the tech-savy home theater enthusiasts and content-conscious home entertainment fans.

First up is the W6000 projector, which features full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, 2500 ANSI lumens, and an impressive 50000:1 contrast ratio. This model was announced earlier this year at InfoComm 09 and can not only display beautiful Blu-ray content, but also upscale lesser video to the full HD resolution by integrating new HQV processing technology. The Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 6500 UB is one of the company’s best home theater projectors. This model features 1600 ANSI lumens, a 75000:1 contrast ratio, and full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. Recently, a writer from Big Picture Big Sound released their review of this projector. When they first took the projector from its box they noticed that the projector itself had a boxy design that wasn’t very appealing. However, after taking a closer look they found out that the projector was not to be judged on looks alone. The setup was pretty straight forward and able to be done in minutes. The projector also came with lens shift and zoom, which helped make positioning the projector that much easier. The writer was very pleased with the projected image. The resolution was very impressive and the colors needed little adjustment in order to display full and vivid images. The writer also liked the rich, deep black levels, as well as the overall sharp image. The only major problem that the writer expressed was that their where problems with the frame interpolation mode. This feature is supposed to smooth out the fast moving scenes in your video by adding additional frames to the picture. However, because this technology is relatively new, it still presents some problems. In the end the final thought about the projector was, ‘Epson’s 6500UB may be boxy, it may be a tad heavy and its frame interpolation mode may not be quite ready for prime time, but that’s not going to stop me from calling it a remarkable performer. You’ll notice I didn’t tack ‘for the money’ onto the end of that sentence. Yes, at less than $3,000 the 6500UB represents a fantastic value in the front projector marketplace. However, its bright and beautiful video performance — particularly with 1080p/24Hz source material — puts the 6500UB in the top echelon of current 1080p projectors. Period.’

Emagine Theaters serve over two million moviegoers annually and are widely regarded as being at the forefront of technology, as well as among the finest in the markets they serve. Samsung is proud to announce today that they are releasing a new projector into Korea today, the SP-P410M (AKA P410M). This projector is Samsung’s first LED model that they are releasing into the area. The P410M features 170 ANSI lumens, SVGA (800 x 600) resolution, and a 1000:1 contrast ratio. The projector is not small enough to be qualified as a pico projector, but it can easily be carried one handed. The model is light weight, weighing only 2 lbs, and measures 5.8’ x 2.6’ x 5.7’ (W x H x D). Because of the small design, the connection panel is limited to only an RGB, composite, and a USB connection, which should be sufficient for most traveling presenters. There is also dual 1 watt speakers in order to play any audio during presentations, or if you want to play movies on vacations. The USB connection allows the projector to play a variety of formats from your computer including DivX, which one of the more popular and high quality video formats. The P410M is currently available through the company’s website, however, the retail price has not been released.

A few months ago, Aiptek announced their T20 pico projector. This model has not been released yet, but we do know the projector features VGA (640 x 480) resolution, LED lamp system, and LCoS display technology. Recently, the writers from Asia One Digital got their hands on this little device and got the opportunity to review it. The first thing that the writers mentioned was the size, which is common for pico projectors. Even though the size of the T20 was impressive, the writers didn’t like the bare minimum resolution. They honestly thought that looking at pictures off of a 10-inch netbook would have looked better than viewing pictures off of the T20. Another problem that is partly due to its size is that the projector has no screen adjustment features other than a focus wheel. This means that in order to get a perfectly square picture you will have to keep your projector level. One of the good qualities that the writers found was that the projector can connect using a USB cable. This feature allows the T20 to connect to the computer and use it as both an energy source and an input source for media content. Unfortunately, according to the writers it appears that the only thing the T20 has going for it is its size when they concluded by saying, ‘Though not as full-featured as larger projectors, this gadget is incredibly portable.’

Two months ago, Optoma announced their HD20 home theater projector. Today, the company is finally releasing the projector to the consumer market. The HD20 features 1700 ANSI lumens, a 4000:1 contrast ratio, and full HD (1920 x 1080). What makes this projector note worthy is that it is the company’s first full HD projector that is priced for under $1000. ‘We’re very excited to be at the forefront of such a significant breakthrough in HD projectors,’ said Jon Grodem, director of product and marketing for Optoma. ‘This new low price opens up a whole new audience to the high definition, large screen, and home theater projection experience. Viewers will love how the HD20 displays an image more than 9 times larger than a 40’ flat screen television, projecting a screen size image greater than 120 inches.’ The HD20 comes with a limited but suitable connection panel, including dual HDMI ports, composite, component, and a VGA port for if the user wants to project their computer screen onto the big screen. Another quality feature about the HD20 is that it only weighs 6.4 lbs, which makes it light enough for travel or to easily mount it on the ceiling. Hitachi CP-X3010N projector unveiled

Hitachi's latest CP-X3010N projector was released, where it is basically an upgraded CO-X3010 with the addition of an Ethernet port and 802.11g/n connectivity. Apart from that, the CP-X3010N will also come equipped with built-in 16W speakers, a brightness level of 3,000 lumens and a contrast ratio that measures 2,000:1. Each purchase will come with Hitachi's own Projector Control and Projector Messenger applications that allow the remote control to wield full power over the source, status, scheduling, synchronization of multiple projectors and presentation of text messages. Nice to see audio pass-through being incorporated so that background audio can be played while the projector is in standby mode. There is no word on pricing or availability at press time.

Every year in August, over 180000 cinema-goers converge on the small Swiss-Italian town of Locarno for their annual film festival. This year is the festival’s 62nd year and this year they contracted a company named Kuurne to supply the theater equipment for both the indoor and outdoor screenings. One of the biggest events during the festival is the open-air screening outside Locarno’s historic Piazza Grande. This year the theater will be supplied with Barco’s DP-3000 projector. This model is on of Barco’s best and features 30000 ANSI lumens, a 2000:1 contrast ratio, and a 2k HD (2048 x 1080) resolution. ‘We wanted to provide the Locarno Film Festival with the best possible technologies,’ says Fabrice Testa, XDC International’s vice president of sales and business development. ‘The Piazza Grande is our biggest challenge, and we needed a projector bright enough to illuminate a 26 meter screen in open air. After last year’s success with the DP-3000, we opted again for this digital cinema projector.’ In addition to the main event at the Piazza, Barco will also supply several other DP series projectors for other venues during the festival.

The BenQ Joybee GP1 is the company’s smallest projector. This model features 100 ANSI lumens, a 2000:1 contrast ratio, and SVGA (858 x 600) resolution. Recently the writer from Broadcast Newsroom got the opportunity to review the GP1. They thought that the setup was very simple, especially with the included setup pamphlet. This allowed the writer to have the projector ready and on shortly after taking it from the box. One of the features that the GP1 is known for is the included USB drive that allows a user to use a flashdrive to hold their presentations instead of using a computer. One of the features that was highlighted was the projector’s wall color correction system, which allows the projector to display on any solid color wall and be able to adjust the picture to display as well as you would be displaying on a plain white screen. The image was fairly good, but it performed much better at night because the projector only comes with 100 ANSI lumens. The last comment that the writer had to say was, ‘The first time I used the Joybee, I was a bit unimpressed, especially coming off viewing some of the more expensive projectors out there, but when I played iRobot, and had the projector dialed in, and at night, I was very surprised at the very good image quality that it output.’

NEC is proud to announce today that they will be releasing their latest large venue projector soon, the NP4100. This projector was announced several months ago but has only recently made its way state side. The NP4100 features 6200 ANSI lumens, a XGA (1024 x 768) resolution, and a 2100:1 contrast ratio. This model is capable of displaying up to a 500 inch display and uses a two lamp system to ensure that this projector can display images in almost any situation. Another feature is the wide array of connection panels that are included like RGB, 5BNC, DVI, component, composite, and s-video as well as several audio ports. There is also a USB port for computer free presentations by connecting a flashdrive instead of a computer cord. The NP4100 is currently available through the NEC website and retails for just under $5500.

When Jakks Pacific announced their plans to release their EyeClops Mini Projector everyone has happy to see a pico projector for under $100. The projector is not released yet, but the writers from Gizmodo got the opportunity to review this micro model. The reviewers went into the review with low expectations, mainly because the EyeClops is made by a toy company not a projector company. Unfortunately, a toy is what this device is. The image was so dull that anything brighter than complete darkness made this display difficult to watch. The only way the writers could get any decent quality the projector has to be moved in to only a foot away from the screen, but this provided a very tiny screen. One of the good qualities that writers liked however was the impressive speaker system that could easily be heard in an adjacent room. The final thought the writer made was, ‘Products like the EyeClops Bionic Eye and Night Vision Goggles are both highly regarded tech toys for children—and both are quite a bit cheaper than this projector. Go with one of those choices and wait for mini projection technology in general to catch up.’
